Where to Sleep

Hotels, B&B, Village Resorts | Farm Stay | Camping | Youth Hostels

Accommodation ranges from luxury hotels to holiday village resorts (such as Forte Village), to campsites, farm stay and hostels. Bear in mind, that in the summer, especially in August, supply in popular areas highly exceeds demand for accommodation and in the winter campsites and a large number of hotels are closed. When possible, make arrangements for your accommodation before you travel particularly if you are staying outside a village, as places might only be reachable by car. Here we propose reviews of some places we have tried.

Hotels, B&B, Village Resorts

Reasonably priced hotels can be found in most areas of major tourist influx and in large villages. To be recommended are the hotels of the interior mountain region providing not only excellent hospitality, prices and food but also local tours (trekking, excursions, etc.). Luxury hotels are mostly based, but not exclusively, in the north-east region of Costa Smeralda. The most exclusive hotels are Pitrizza and Hotel Cala di Volpe, both really available only to the rich and famous. However, there are some more accessible gems across the island, such as: 'Su Cologone' in Oliena; 'Tanka Village' in Villasimius; 'Le Dune' near Arbus.

Village Resort Albaruja - Costa Rei, Via C. Colombo. Tel: +39 070 991557 or +39 070 991415.

This resort offers self-catering accommodation. The spacious, comfortable rooms have en-suite bathrooms, satellite TV, cooking facilities (including cutlery, crockery and fridge) and either a veranda or a balcony where you can have your meals. The independent entrance to each room and the layout of the complex ensure privacy. The resort has a swimming pool, tennis court, a children playground, bar, breakfast room and internet point. There is no in-house restaurant, but the complex is in a major tourist location surrounded by restaurants, bars, shops, etc. Private parking is available and the beach is only a short walk away. Service is efficient and friendly. However, there is a minimum stay of a week during peak season (July and August).

Farm stay: Agriturismo

Farm stay (Agriturismo) is an affordable quality alternative. Agriturismi are working farms that subsidise their income by providing lodgings and food. Farms undergo strict checks to meet the approval of the local authorities for the standard of accommodation. Rooms are comfortable and most of them have en-suite bathrooms. They provide from bed and breakfast to full board. It is frequent for the family to share their meals with guests, but some farms have full fledged restaurants where farmers traditional fare is served in a Set Menu - by law, 70% of the food served must be produced within the farm. A number of them organise horse riding, trekking excursions, hunting, home cookery and crafts courses. Farmers are extremely hospitable and this is the best way to get to know Sardinia more intimately. Advanced booking is essential.

Sa Mandra - Alghero, Loc. Sa Segada. Tel: +39 079 999150

This farm is best know for its superior traditional cuisine (set menu). Surroundings are pleasant and it is a good option for people who want to stay a short driving distance from Alghero.

Mandra Edera - Abbasanta. Tel: +39 0785 52710

Spacious, comfortable rooms with quality deco. There is a swimming pool and they offer horse riding lessons. Isolated location but very good for its nearness to the main dual carriage and for being in the centre (a bit west) of the island, making it an appropriate stopover or a base for local explorations. Good set meals.

Camping

Campsite services and facilities in Sardinia are generally first-rate. Campsites tend to be self-contained villages with shops, bars, restaurants and they organise activities and entertainment. The best ones are set up within lovely surroundings. If you don’t have a tent, you can rent a caravan, bungalow or chalet (minimum stay usually applies). Due to intense heat in the summer, ensure that the site has lots of trees to shelter from the sun. Camp sites are so popular in some locations, that in August you need to book in advance even if you have only a small tent. N.B: Free camping is not allowed in Sardinia.

La Mariposa Campsite - Alghero, Via Lido. +39 079 950480

The campsite has a private beach, a barbeque area, a shop and a bar. There are plenty of trees for shaded cover. Facilities are good (toilets, showers, wash basins and sinks, washing machines). You can also rent double rooms with bunk beds, caravans or bungalows. It is a bit of a walk along the lido to get to the centre of town.

Camping Isuledda - Cannigione, Loc. La Conia. Tel: +39 0789 86003

Probably one of the most popular campsites and very near the Emerald Coast. This is a truly outstanding location. The site is set up in a self-enclosed peninsula, and surrounded by a number of beaches and rocky promontories. This is not the cheapest resort but it takes care of most of your holiday needs within its complex. The site has a couple of shops, a self service restaurant and an a-la-carte menu restaurant, entertainment stage, disco, 2 bars, wellness centre. The resort organises sailing, diving and a number of sport activities and entertainment. It is about 5-10 minutes drive from the lovely Cannigione village. The only complaints to be made are possibly the need to increase the number of toilets and showers and the staff is often rude. Advanced booking recommended in peak season (August) because it gets very busy.

Camping Cala Gonone - Cala Gonone. Tel: + 39 0784 93165

Based at the entrance of the village, the campsite is only a short walk from the centre. It has a swimming pool, tennis court, basketball area, mini soccer, children's play ground, table tennis, foosball, meeting area with TV, bar, shop, restaurant / pizzeria, barbecue area. Toilets and washing facilities are acceptable. There are lots of trees for shade.

Limone Beach Camping - Loc. Cala Sinzias, Castiadas. Tel: +39 70 995006

Right on a wonderful beach in a quite secluded area between Villasimius and Costa Rei. There are plenty of tree lined shaded plots. Facilities are good (toilets, showers, wash basins and sinks, washing machines). On site market, bar, restaurant, pizzeria, entertainment, water sport facilities and activities.

There are few hostels in Sardinia. They offer dorm facilities with sheets and include breakfast. Sometimes they provide optional cheap meals.
